DOC Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is said to have gained commercial fame in the early 1950s, when two producers invested in constructing a cellar in one of the "castelli" (castles) to process grapes, and distinguished their product using a uniquely shaped bottle inspired by the Greek amphora—an homage to the Dorian civilization believed to be associated with the founding of Ancona.
