Syrah is a black grape variety originating in France, seemingly from the northern Côtes du Rhône or the Dauphiné region. In France, the total vineyard area planted with Syrah was only 1,602 hectares in 1958, but it has since expanded to 65,000 hectares, as the variety is now widely cultivated not only in the Rhône Valley but also in Languedoc and Provence.
In Australia, Syrah is the most widely planted grape variety, where it is commonly known as "Shiraz".
