Dornfelder is a black grape variety originating in Germany. It was created in 1955 through the artificial crossbreeding of Helfensteiner and Heroldrebe. Dornfelder is the second most widely cultivated black grape variety in Germany, following Blauer Spätburgunder. While its cultivation area increased to 8,197 hectares by 2012, it has recently declined to around 6,600 hectares.
