Roussanne is a white grape variety originating in France. Along with Marsanne, it is one of the key white grape varieties in the northern Rhône region. The wines produced from Roussanne are known for their elegance and are considered to be of higher quality compared to those made from Marsanne. Although it has traditionally been considered a difficult variety to grow due to its susceptibility to diseases such as powdery mildew and botrytis (grey rot), the introduction of less disease-prone clones and greater interest in the variety have led to its wider planting. In 1958, the planted area in France was as low as 71 hectares, but Roussanne has since expanded to regions such as the southern Rhône and Languedoc, with the total cultivated area now reaching 2,450 hectares.
