Bourgogne mousseux is the only sparkling red wine recognized as an AOC in France, and its production is extremely limited.

When it was granted AOC status in 1943, Bourgogne mousseux included not only sparkling red wine but also rosé and white sparkling wines. However, with the establishment of AOC Crémant de Bourgogne, it has now become an AOC exclusively for sparkling red wine.
