The DOCa Rioja wine production region extends along both banks of the Ebro River and is divided into three areas: Rioja Alavesa on the left bank, Rioja Alta on the upper section of the right bank, and Rioja Oriental on the lower section of the right bank.
Rioja Alavesa is located in Álava Province in the Basque Country, Rioja Alta is in La Rioja, and Rioja Oriental spans La Rioja and Navarra.
Red wine production is predominant in DOCa Rioja, with approximately 78% of the vineyard area planted with the black grape variety Tempranillo. Garnacha Tinta accounts for just under 7%, while the white grape variety Viura makes up about 6%.
